Grief & Loss Therapy in Tucson

When life feels different after a loss

Grief can change the way you experience your everyday life. You may be trying to keep up with work, family, and responsibilities while carrying a deep sadness that other people don’t always see.

Some days you may feel overwhelmed by the loss. Other days you may feel okay and then suddenly be reminded of the person, relationship, or life you had before. You might feel sad, angry, guilty, numb, relieved, confused—or several of those things at once.

There isn’t a right way to grieve, and there isn’t a timeline for when you should be “over it.”

Grief isn't only about losing someone to death

We often think of grief as something that follows the death of someone we love, but people can experience grief after many kinds of losses.

You may be grieving the end of a relationship or marriage, a friendship that changed, a miscarriage, the loss of a pet, changes in your health, a child leaving home, a career change, or a future you expected that didn’t happen.

You may notice that you:

  • Think about the loss more than you expected

  • Feel lonely even when other people are around

  • Have trouble concentrating or staying motivated

  • Feel guilty about things you did or didn’t say or do

  • Get frustrated when others expect you to move on

  • Avoid reminders because they feel too painful

  • Feel disconnected from people who don’t seem to understand

  • Have good days and then feel guilty for enjoying yourself

Grief can be unpredictable. Feeling better one day and struggling the next doesn’t mean you’re going backward.

How can grief therapy help?

Therapy isn’t about helping you forget someone or convincing you to “move on.” It’s about giving you a place where you don’t have to protect other people from how you really feel. A place where you can be vulnerable without fearing judgment.

At Manifest Joy Counseling, we can help you make sense of the emotions that come with loss, work through guilt or unanswered questions, and find ways to cope when grief feels especially heavy. Therapy can also help when a loss has brought up older experiences or caused you to question who you are and what your life looks like now.

Our therapists use approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other approaches based on your needs. Sometimes you may want to talk about the loss. Other times you may need help figuring out how to handle everyday life while you’re grieving. Both belong in therapy.

You don't have to grieve a certain way

There may be people around you who care deeply but don’t know what to say. You may even feel pressure to be strong for everyone else. Maybe you feel a sense of embarrassment because you haven’t been able to string together more than 2 days without crying. It’s okay to feel your grief.

Therapy gives you a place where you can be honest about what you’re experiencing without worrying about whether you’re grieving the “right” way.
